AT&T rolling out mobile 5G in more cities

AT&T Inc. plans to roll out mobile 5G in parts of five additional cities in 2018.

The new cities are Houston; Jacksonville, Fla.; Louisville, New Orleans and San Antonio. These new cities join the cities of Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; Dallas; Indianapolis; Oklahoma City; Raleigh, N.C.; and Waco, Texas.

"Future smart factories and retailers, self-driving cars, untethered virtual and augmented realities, and other yet-to-be-discovered experiences will grow up on tomorrow's 5G networks," Andre Fuetsch, chief technology officer of AT&T Communications, said in a Sept. 10 news release. "Much like 4G introduced the world to the gig economy, mobile 5G will jumpstart the next wave of unforeseen innovation."

In 2019, the U.S. carrier plans to introduce mobile 5G in parts of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Tenn.; Orlando, Fla.; San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose, Calif.

The company said its foundational 5G Evolution technology is now live in more than 200 markets and will reach more than 400 markets this year.

Next-generation 5G networks are expected to deliver speeds 100x faster than 4G and connect the billions of devices that will comprise the internet of things.
