Xcel Energy closes acquisition of 478-MW wind project in Texas

Southwestern Public Service Co. plans to start building the 478-MW Hale wind project in Hale County, Texas, this July, after completing its purchase from NextEra Energy Resources LLC.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The wind project is expected to cost $735 million, according to a July 6 report by The Associated Press. Construction of the facility, along with the 522-MW Sagamore wind project in Roosevelt County, N.M., was approved by New Mexico regulators in March and Texas regulators in May.

The Hale project will feature wind turbines from Vestas Wind Systems A/S. The Xcel Energy Inc. subsidiary expects the project to enter commercial operation in June 2019, according to a July 3 news release.
