The week in OTT: Viacom inks streaming deal; Windstream offers DIRECTV NOW

The week in over-the-top provides a recap of recent news related to streaming initiatives in the U.S. from various networks and platforms.

* Viacom Inc. signed a mobile streaming deal with Telefónica SA. The deal allows Movistar Play to carry live feeds of MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central and Paramount Channel TV channels in the region beginning in the first semester of 2018, according to a Feb. 5 news release. Viacom's mobile streaming apps MTV Play, Nickelodeon Play, Comedy Central Play and Noggin will also be available to Movistar Play subscribers.

* Windstream Holdings Inc. agreed to offer AT&T Inc.'s DIRECTV satellite service and DIRECTV NOW streaming service to residential customers across its entire service area. The DIRECTV services will be bundled with Windstream's high-speed internet service Kinetic by Windstream, the company said Feb. 1.

* Netflix Inc. entered into a production deal with Univision Communications Inc.'s Fusion Media Group, LLC for at least five series in English and Spanish, Variety reported Feb. 1. The deal includes "Tijuana," a Spanish-language drama series set to begin production in April. Univision (US) will broadcast the series in the U.S. before it streams on Netflix. The deal also includes two Spanish-language scripted series and two English-language docu-series.

* Roku Inc. added Google Inc.'s YouTube TV on select Roku devices. YouTube TV allows Roku users to stream live sports, local and national news, and must-see shows the moment they air on live TV, the company said Feb. 1.

* YouTube TV on Jan. 31 struck a deal to become Los Angeles Football Club's exclusive English-language local TV partner. YouTube TV will feature all locally televised LAFC matches on a designated channel on the service, and it will also have a YouTube TV logo prominently displayed on the front of the team's jersey, according to a post on lafc.com.

* Sports-focused streaming TV service fuboTV further expanded its local TV coverage by adding 23 more local NBC (US) stations and two CBS (US) affiliates. The new NBC stations offered by fuboTV include KARE in Minneapolis; KGW in Portland, Ore.; KHNL in Honolulu; KING in Seattle; KOB in Albuquerque, N.M.; and KPNX in Phoenix.

In other platform news

* Netflix is partnering with Japanese anime studios Production I.G Inc., Wit Studios and Bones Inc. to co-produce anime series and stream them in 190 countries, Anime News Network reported Jan. 31. The partnership is the streaming giant's latest attempt to ramp up its animated content.

* Netflix is engaged in talks for a multipicture deal with EuropaCorp, Variety reported Jan. 30, citing sources. Under the deal, French filmmaker Luc Besson would direct and produce several movies for the streaming giant. Netflix could also buy movies from the EuropaCorp library, which has an estimated value of €150 million. It includes franchises such as "Taken" and "Transporter." The movies produced under the deal would reportedly be labeled Netflix originals and have budgets in the $30 million range, sources said.

* The Olympic Channel (US) struck a multiyear content deal with Snap Inc. The agreement includes Olympic Channel original programming for Shows on Snapchat's Discover page and assets for creative tools, such as Olympic-themed lenses, filters and stickers, according to a Jan. 30 news release.

* Discovery Communications Inc.'s Discovery Networks is bringing a range of channels and some of its content to iflix, following a partnership, the latter announced Jan. 30. Iflix will enable dedicated channels Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet on its platform following the deal, with content available for streaming or download.

* Altice USA Inc. is offering the Altice One connectivity platform across the full Optimum footprint with integrated access to Netflix. Altice One offers an all-in-one Ultra HD video, high speed broadband, Wi-Fi and IP phone service in a home hub. The cloud-based platform includes a personalized user interface and fully integrated access to live television, video on demand, streaming apps and cloud DVR recordings, the company said Jan. 29.
