Report: Audi to join BMW-Daimler's self-driving car alliance

Audi AG will join the autonomous vehicle alliance of German rivals Daimler AG and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, Reuters reported Aug. 22, citing German business news magazine Wirtschaftswoche.

Volkswagen AG-owned Audi will be part of a three-way alliance with Daimler and BMW that will jointly develop advanced driving assistance systems for vehicles, according to the report. The carmakers will specifically create systems for level 3 autonomous cars that would allow for autonomous driving on highways, as well as automated parking, the newswire said.

Audi is expected to make an announcement about its entry into the BMW-Daimler alliance at the Frankfurt, Germany, auto show in early September, the publication reportedly said.

Wirtschaftswoche added that Volkswagen will continue working on its autonomous vehicle project with Ford Motor Co.

In January, Volkswagen and Ford signed a memorandum of understanding to explore collaborations on autonomous vehicles, mobility services and electric cars. At the time, the companies confirmed their alliance for commercial vans and medium-sized pickups. Volkswagen, in July, pumped $2.6 billion into Ford-backed Argo AI LLC to mark the start of their partnership on self-driving cars.

Also in July, BMW and Daimler agreed to develop autonomous driving systems for use on highways and in self-parking. The companies are looking to deploy level 4 self-driving capabilities in their cars by 2024.
