Papua New Guinea court allows mining to continue at Porgera after lease expires

Papua New Guinea's National Court ruled that the Porgera gold mine can continue operations after its current special mining lease expires Aug. 16, while the government considers an application for a 20-year extension, Barrick Gold Corp. said Aug. 2.

Porgera is operated by Barrick Niugini Ltd., a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd.

Barrick President and CEO Mark Bristow recently met with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape to discuss a partnership for the Porgera mine.
