Hydro-Québec secured the last key permit from Canada's National Energy Board to build the Northern Pass project in Quebec.
The 320-kV DC transmission line will deliver Canadian hydropower to New England. It was selected in January by Massachusetts for long-term supply of "clean" energy, but New Hampshire regulators rejected the project's application for a siting permit on Feb. 1. Approvals from the National Energy Board and the Québec government were required because the project is an international transmission line.
Project partner Eversource Energy is currently appealing the New Hampshire ruling, adding 75 conditional concessions to its proposal. Meanwhile, Massachusetts announced that it plans to continue conditional contract negotiations with the project until March 27.
