Facebook Inc. unveiled personal fundraisers, a tool allowing people to raise funds for various reasons, the company announced March 30.
The platform will launch in the U.S. for users 18 years old and above, and will be rolled out in beta in the coming weeks. Facebook will charge a fee equivalent to 6.9% of the amount being raised, plus 30 cents, to be used for payment processing fees, fundraiser vetting, security and fraud protection.
Upon launch, users with critical financial needs in the areas of education, medical, pet medical, crisis relief, personal emergency and funeral and loss will be able to use the platform. Facebook expects to expand personal fundraisers in the future to cover more categories.
The company said donations will be made through secure payments without leaving Facebook.
