American Airlines fined $22.1M for falsely reporting mail delivery times

American Airlines Group Inc. will pay a fine of approximately $22.1 million to settle allegations that it falsely reported delivery times for U.S. mail to foreign postal administrations or other intended recipients, the Department of Justice said Aug. 20.

The airline had signed contracts with the U.S. Postal Service, under which it would deliver mail from six locations in the country or several government offices abroad and deliver them to their intended local and international destinations. The contracts specified that the airline would incur penalties for mail that was delivered late or to the wrong location.

The Justice Department was investigating American Airlines' contracts with the Postal Service in 2009 to 2011, Reuters reported, citing a securities filing from April 2015.
