Nuclear update: US output ticks higher as Hatch, Palo Verde units return

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability rose early May 29 to 96.80%, up from 94.11% on May 25 and higher than the 88.86% reported on the same day a year ago.

Providing a boost to total output was the return of two reactors. Pinnacle West Capital Corp.'s Palo Verde 2 in Arizona was at full power early May 29 after being automatically tripped May 23. Southern Co.'s Hatch 2 in Georgia was pegged at 92% power early May 29 after being taken offline May 19 for undisclosed reasons.

In addition, DTE Energy Co.'s Fermi 2 in Michigan was at full power early May 29, up from 73% on May 25, and unit 1 of Entergy Corp.'s Arkansas Nuclear One plant in Arkansas saw output rise from 37% on May 25 to 69% early May 29.

As of early May 29, only Entergy's Grand Gulf 1 in Mississippi and Dominion Energy Inc.'s Surry 1 in Virginia remain offline.
