Barry Callebaut, Hershey team up to combat child labor in Africa

Chocolate companies Barry Callebaut AG and Hershey Co. are working together to eradicate child labor in Côte d'Ivoire, Africa, according to a June 12 release.

The companies will address community needs and implement child labor monitoring and remediation with farmers across 32 communities in the African country. The goal, they said, is to "empower cocoa farmer communities to take the fight against child labor into their own hands."

Barry Callebaut and Hershey will provide training and resources focused on child protection, education and women empowerment. They will use Katchilè, a geotraceability app developed by Barry Callebaut, to assess farmers' needs and track their impact related to sustainability activities.

The app will also be used to capture data, identify households at risk as well as the presence of children working in the cocoa communities the companies source from.

The International Cocoa Initiative will lead the delivery of training programs on child labor monitoring and data analysis and will drive remediation activities, according to the release.
