Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, said he was on the call between the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents that is at the heart of an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, CNBC reported.
Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July to "look into" allegations involving former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, according to a memorandum of the phone call. A whistleblower's complaint later claimed that Trump tried to use "the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election."
House Democrats launched a formal impeachment inquiry into the president Sept. 24.
"I was on the phone call," Pompeo, who seemingly denied knowledge of the matter previously, reportedly said at a press conference in Italy.
Pompeo was subpoenaed by lawmakers Sept. 27 for documents pertaining to the inquiry.
Trump said Oct. 2 that the impeachment inquiry was driving equities lower.
A slower pace of hiring in the U.S. private sector earlier in the day and disappointing U.S. manufacturing data yesterday reignited concerns about the U.S. economy.
