Report: Amazon ramps up grocery store plans in Los Angeles

Amazon.com Inc. has signed more than 12 leases in Los Angeles as part of its plan to roll out a chain of grocery stores in the U.S., The Wall Street Journal reported Oct. 1, citing people familiar with the matter.

Sources reportedly said one of the first grocery locations in will be at a strip center, owned by Paragon Commercial Group LLC, in Los Angeles' Woodland Hills neighborhood.

According to the report, the first few Los Angeles sites will likely be in Woodland Hills and Studio City, with another store expected to launch in the city of Irvine. These locations could open as early as the end of 2019.

The Journal added that the shops are expected to sell prepared food and mainstream grocery items to middle-income consumers living outside urban cores.

The e-commerce company also plans to roll out early outposts in Chicago and Philadelphia, sources reportedly told the newspaper. They said Amazon is looking at strip centers and open-air shopping centers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as well.

A spokeswoman for Amazon told the Journal that the company does not comment on rumor or speculation, while Paragon Commercial Group did not respond to requests for comment.

The newspaper reported that it could not confirm what the new physical stores will be called and if they will use the same cashierless technology that runs Amazon Go.
