Toyota Motor Corp. will recall a total of 14,215 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles of model year 2019 that were sold in the U.S. over concerns that their back-up camera may not activate when the car is in reverse.
According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, if the back-up camera system of a vehicle does not activate and if drivers do not check their surroundings while reversing, it could heighten the risk of a crash.
The RAV4 vehicles involved in the recall were produced between May 27 and July 27, while the RAV4 hybrids were made between May 27 and July 11.
Of the total vehicles involved in the recall, Toyota estimates that only about 0.2% of the cars may have defective camera systems.
The recall will be conducted by the Japanese carmaker's local unit, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America Inc., starting Sept. 23. Dealers will inspect the vehicles' backup camera system and replace the audio display unit, if necessary, free of charge.
