Seven-Eleven Japan store sales grow 5.1% YOY in April

Seven & i Holdings Co. Ltd. on May 15 reported that total sales of its Seven-Eleven Japan stores grew 5.1% year over year in April.

Existing store sales in Seven-Eleven Japan grew 1.6% from the year-ago period. Its number of customers declined 0.3% but average spending per customer rose 1.9%. In April, its number of stores increased to 20,337 from 20,286 in March.

The company's overseas unit, 7-Eleven Inc., posted a 30.6% jump in total store sales for the month, with merchandise sales and gasoline sales up 11.5% and 53.7%, respectively. Merchandise sales in existing U.S. stores fell 1% year over year.

Meanwhile, its general merchandise store chain Ito-Yokado experienced a 0.4% decline in total store sales. In existing stores, merchandise sales fell 0.3% and customer numbers dropped 2%, while average spend per customer went up 1.8%.

Supermarket subsidiary York-Benimaru reported a total sales increase of 1.8%. Sales at existing stores fell 1.3% as customer numbers dropped 1% and average spend per customer also fell by 0.4%.

At Seven & i's department store unit, Sogo & Seibu, sales at existing stores increased 0.4% year over year but total sales declined 13%.

Restaurant division Seven & i Food Systems posted a 0.2% increase in total store sales for the month as existing store sales grew 1.7%. Customers numbers declined 2.6%, but average spend climbed 4.4%.
