Vietnam's coal exports rise 7.6% YOY in 2018

Vietnam's coal exports grew 7.6% year over year in 2018 to about 2.4 million tons of coal on continually increasing Asian demand, Xinhua News Agency reported Jan. 14.

Vietnam's 2018 exports were worth $325 million, up 13.1% compared to the previous year. Vietnam exported 200,000 tons of coal worth $30 million in December 2018 alone, representing a 22% decrease in volume and 0.8% decrease in value compared to the same month a year ago, the report said, citing Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Holding Corp. Ltd., the country's biggest coal producer and exporter, said it expects coal demand from India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines and other Asian countries to continue increasing in the coming years as Chinese demand falls. The company, also called Vinacomin, sold 38.7 million tons of coal in the domestic market and exported 1.8 million tons of coal in 2018.
