Three gold miners were killed in an unknown incident at Sibanye Gold Ltd.'s Ikamva mine, part of the Kloof gold operations in South Africa, while another two remain missing, Reuters reported June 11.
The company said the five workers entered an abandoned working place at the Ikamva mine. Spokesperson James Wellsted said the company is not sure what happened afterward.
Sibanye noted that rescuers continue to search for the missing workers, while an investigation into the incident was launched.
The National Union of Mineworkers said it was "highly disturbed and angered" by the incident, adding that it was "unacceptable."
According to the report, at least 18 people have so far died at Sibanye's South African mines this year. In 2017, 88 people lost lives in mines in the country.
