Panasonic, Greentown China open unmanned supermarket

Panasonic Corp. said Sept. 5 it has unveiled an unmanned supermarket called GreenMart plus in partnership with real estate firm Greentown China Holdings Ltd., at the Hangzhou Panasonic Industrial Park.

GreenMart plus, which is open 24 hours, uses facial recognition and self-checkout counters. The store concept, which opened on Aug. 22, sells about 500 fresh food items, but also serves as a convenience store and restaurant.

The 400-square-meter store also has a Light Kitchen Experience Zone that features Panasonic appliances, such as steam ovens and dishwashers, that customers can use.

GreenMart plus was specifically created for the 5,000 employees working at the industrial park. Customers are able to "reserve the products they want via a mobile phone application and then process the food they bought at the Panasonic Light Kitchen," the company said.
