DoorDash reveals data breach; Keurig Dr Pepper to sell McDonald's McCafé coffee

TOP NEWS

* Food delivery company DoorDash Inc. disclosed that it had detected a systems breach that affects about 4.9 million consumers, delivery workers and merchants who joined the business platform on or before April 5, 2018. DoorDash said it had taken immediate steps to enhance security across its platform and block further unauthorized access.

* McDonald's Corp. signed a licensing and distribution agreement with Keurig Dr Pepper Inc., wherein the latter will sell McCafé packaged coffee and manufacture McCafé K-Cup pods for the U.S. market. The new agreement marks an end to McDonald's six-year packaged coffee distribution partnership with The Kraft Heinz Co.

FOOD RETAIL & DISTRIBUTION

* Family-owned Camus Cognac and China's JD.com Inc. have expanded their distribution partnership, under which the online retailer will sell premium Camus brands and launch exclusive products for the Chinese market. The retailer will also work with the cognac-maker to develop its offline marketing channels.

* Electronics retailer Suning.com Co. Ltd. said it completed its previously announced acquisition of an 80% stake in Carrefour SA's China business for €620 million, or 4.8 billion yuan. Suning appointed Tian Rui, vice president of Suning, as the new CEO of Carrefour China.

BEVERAGES

* Fomento Económico Mexicano SAV de CV will pick up a minority stake in Jetro Restaurant Depot to create a joint venture that will take the U.S. cash-and-carry retailer's business model to Mexico and other Latin American markets. The Mexican Coca-Cola Co. bottler plans to invest $750 million in Jetro.

* Anheuser-Busch InBev SA and Mahou San Miguel have inked an agreement, wherein the Spanish brewer will begin producing and distributing the Belgian company's beer brands, including Corona, Budweiser and Stella Artois, in Spain from Jan. 1, 2020.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS

* Agribusiness Cargill Inc. reported a 3% year-over-year increase in fiscal 2020 first-quarter adjusted operating profit to $908 million from $883 million. For the quarter ended Aug. 31, revenue rose 1% to $29 billion, driven by strong growth in its North American protein business.

TOBACCO & SMOKING PRODUCTS

* Colorado-based recreational dispensaries operator Medicine Man Technologies Inc. said it stopped sales of all vaping products that contain propylene glycol or vitamin E acetate, amid the growing number of lung illnesses associated with vaping. On Sept. 24, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said vaping-linked lung illness cases rose by nearly 52% to 805 from 530 cases in the prior week.

* Members of Congress have asked four e-cigarette companies, Fontem Ventures BV, Japan Tobacco International USA Inc., Reynolds American Inc. and NJOY LLC, to stop advertising their products and called on large retailers to halt sales of all tobacco products as an outbreak of mysterious vaping-related illnesses continues. Separately, several Democratic senators sent letters to Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., Rite Aid Corp., Dollar General Corp. and Walmart Inc. urging them to stop selling all tobacco products.

* Indian e-cigarette importers Plume Vapour and Woke Vapors have filed separate legal challenges in the city of Kolkata's high court against the government's e-cigarette ban, Reuters reported, citing court filings. "We are confident of defending our decision," a senior health ministry official in New Delhi reportedly said.

* Philip Morris International Inc. CEO André Calantzopoulos said the vaping health crisis in the U.S. is a "very emotional issue," adding that it would result in a highly regulated market in terms of product, marketing and other restrictions by the end of 2021 or 2022, the executive told CNBC in an interview.

* Juul Labs Inc. asked a federal court panel in Los Angeles to transfer at least 55 cases in more than 20 states related to its marketing and advertising practices to San Francisco, Bloomberg News reported. The e-cigarette maker and most of the plaintiffs' lawyers reportedly agreed that class-action suits and personal injury cases that are similar enough should be managed by a single judge.

PACKAGED FOODS

* Italian premium-coffee maker Illycaffè SpA has hired Goldman Sachs to find a strategic retail partner in the U.S. who can acquire a stake in the family-owned company, Reuters reported. The coffee company reportedly plans to expand its U.S.-branded cafes to 200, more than 10 times its current footprint.

* Nestlé SA unit Nestlé Health Science acquired a minority stake in U.S.-based childhood food allergy prevention business Before Brands Inc. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, but Nestlé said the acquisition includes the exclusive licensing rights to Before Brands products outside the U.S.

* Maker of frozen potato products Lamb Weston Holdings Inc. declared a quarterly dividend of 20 cents per common share, payable Nov. 29 to shareholders of record as of Nov. 1.

* Dairy cooperative FrieslandCampina Nederland BV appointed Elze Jellema to its board, effective Dec. 17. The company also named Angelien Kemna and Heiko Schipper to its supervisory board.

* Swiss food giant Nestlé SA said it will introduce its new plant-based Incredible Burger and Incredible Mince under its Garden Gourmet plant-centric food range in its home market.

* Australian confectioner Yowie Group Ltd. said it would incur an impairment cost of $500,000 against its noncurrent assets that were incorrectly valued. After accounting for the write-down, the total comprehensive loss attributable to the company came in at $5.52 million for fiscal 2019 ended June 30.

RESTAURANTS

* U.K. restaurant and pub operator Mitchells & Butlers PLC said its total like-for-like sales for the eight weeks ended Sept. 21 increased 3.3%, driven by a 4% increase in its drink sales.

* More than 100 local government officials from across 30 states have written to McDonald's Corp. CEO Steve Easterbrook, asking the fast-food giant to take concrete actions to protect workers from forms of sexual harassment and violence in its stores. The company has faced more than 50 sexual harassment charges in the last three years.

* New York filed a lawsuit against Dunkin' Brands Group Inc., accusing the donut chain of exposing its users to a series of cyberattacks between 2015 and 2018, Reuters reported, citing New York Attorney General Letitia James. In the 2015 cyberattack, 19,715 customer accounts reportedly were targeted, while more than 300,000 accounts were accessed in attacks in late 2018. Dunkin' did not immediately respond to a request for comment, the report added.

* Restaurant Brands International Inc.-owned Burger King has signed an agreement with Tallink Grupp to open restaurants in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The franchise partner plans to open the first Burger King outlet in Estonia in winter 2019, followed by Latvia and Lithuania in the first half of 2020.

The day ahead

Early morning futures indicators pointed to a higher opening for the U.S. market.

In Asia, the Hang Seng declined 0.33% to 25,954.81, and the Nikkei 225 dropped 0.77% to 21,878.90.

In Europe, around midday, the FTSE 100 was up 1.12% to 7,433.37, and the Euronext 100 was up 0.38% to 1,093.52.

On the macro front

The durable goods orders report, the personal income and outlays report, the consumer sentiment report, the farm prices report and the Baker-Hughes Rig Count report are due out today.
