Irish deputy PM steps down, saving government from potential collapse

Irish Deputy Prime Minister Frances Fitzgerald stepped down, averting a potential government collapse and snap election, according to media reports.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has written to Micheál Martin, leader of the Fianna Fáil opposition party, confirming that Varadkar has accepted Fitzgerald's resignation offer, Irish broadcaster RTE reported Nov. 28.

"Today I made the decision to tender my resignation to the [prime minister], stepping down with immediate effect,” Fitzgerald said, according to Reuters.

An early election would have weakened Varadkar's position heading into Brexit negotiations at a European summit in December, according to The Guardian, which cited senior sources in Dublin. Sources from the opposition party had told the publication that Fianna Fáil would withdraw from the threat of bringing its own motion of no confidence in Fitzgerald, if she resigned.

Fitzgerald has come under pressure over her handling of a case involving a police whistle-blower when she was Ireland's justice minister.
