Sibanye safely returns all trapped Beatrix gold project employees to surface

Sibanye Gold Ltd. said Feb. 2 that all underground employees who were trapped in the underground operations of the Beatrix gold project in South Africa, which was crippled by a power outage caused by the collapse of primary and secondary powerlines during a severe storm in the Free State province Jan. 31, have safely been returned to surface.

The company said that an emergency power supply enabled the evacuation of 64 employees at the Beatrix 1 shaft and 272 employees at the Beatrix 4 shaft the following morning. However, damage to the winder control systems and generators at the Beatrix 3 shaft resulting from the power surge caused 955 employees to remain stranded at the shaft stations until the powerlines were restored.

Employees who were evacuated from the mine shafts will undergo medical examinations and trauma counseling. Sibanye expects operations at Beatrix to resume on Feb. 5.
