Excelerate Energy, TGS to study liquefaction project in Argentina

Excelerate Energy LP and Transportadora de Gas del Sur SA, or TGS, on Sept. 10 signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly study the feasibility of a liquefaction project in Bahía Blanca, Argentina.

Through the MOU, the companies will analyze the technical and commercial viability of liquefying and exporting natural gas during the summer season as Argentina potentially has an excess due to the development of its shale gas reserves.

"This project will significantly enhance Argentina's capacity to maximize the use of local resources by allowing a more predictable development of shale gas production while reducing the overall costs of importing LNG," Excelerate Chief Commercial Officer Daniel Bustos said.

The study is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and the companies will share the results with the government and industry officials, who will then decide on any further action.

In addition, TGS is carrying out a midstream infrastructure project to transport and condition natural gas produced from Argentina's Vaca Muerta Basin, which will help develop the country's shale gas reserves.

TGS Chief Commercial Officer Nestor Martin said the project will also promote the development of unconventional gas by expanding the market and increasing export opportunities once domestic needs are met.

Excelerate Energy is a U.S.-based company that provides transportation and marketing of LNG as well as storage and floating regasification services.
