Midday Monday: Bank, thrift stocks down on Columbus Day

At noon, U.S. bank and thrift stocks were trading slightly lower Monday, Oct. 9, as the nation celebrates Columbus Day.

The SNL U.S. Bank Index retreated 0.44% to 580.22, while the SNL U.S. Thrift Index declined 0.25% to 941.12.

Among broader markets, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked up 0.04% to 22,782.21, the Nasdaq Composite Index added 0.06% to 6,594.23 and the S&P 500 lost 0.04% to 2,548.40.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. fell 0.37% to $96.57, Bank of America Corp. dropped 0.80% to $26.00, Wells Fargo & Co. was down 0.55% to $55.28 and Citigroup Inc. slipped 0.37% to $75.36.

Among notable price movers, First BanCorp. fell 1.53% to $5.15.

In the thrift space, BofI Holding Inc. lost 2.40% to $27.25.
