SK Telecom, Sinclair form JV for next-gen TV

South Korea's SK Telecom Co. Ltd. and U.S. broadcaster Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. have agreed to form a joint venture that will develop broadcasting solutions based on the ATSC 3.0 standard.

The joint venture company is aimed at providing ATSC 3.0-based solutions to all U.S. broadcasting companies, while also looking for more opportunities in other markets, Sinclair said Jan. 7.

The venture, which will be jointly funded and managed by the two companies, is expected to begin operating in the first quarter of 2019.

In 2018, SK Telecom began a tie-up with Sinclair and its unit ONE Media 3.0 LLC to develop an ATSC 3.0-based broadcasting platform.
