Nuclear update: Total output eases after loss of unit at Arkansas Nuclear One

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability took a small step back early May 17 to 91.23%, down from 91.46% on May 16 but still above the 79.80% reported on the same day last year.

Working to pull down total availability was the loss of unit 1 of Entergy Corp.'s Arkansas Nuclear One in Arkansas. According to a report filed with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the reactor was tripped late May 16 "due to the trip of the 'B' Main Feedwater Pump." Prior to being taken offline, the NRC report pegged the unit at 10% power.

In addition, DTE Energy Co.'s Fermi 2 in Michigan saw output fall from 87% on May 16 to 63% early May 17, and Entergy's River Bend 1 in Louisiana was operating at 66% power early May 17, down from 93% on May 16.

On the other hand, Nine Mile Point 2 in New York, which is owned by Exelon Corp., EDF Group and Long Island Power Authority, saw output rise from 23% on May 16 to 33% early May 17.

Including the aforementioned unit 1 of Arkansas Nuclear One, a total of six units were offline as of early May 17.
