Philip Morris International Inc. on Oct. 10 said that it plans to make all its factories carbon-neutral by 2030.
In the same release, the tobacco company said its manufacturing site in Klaipeda, Lithuania, had already achieved that goal.
The company said it was able to create its first carbon-neutral site by upgrading utilities equipment, facilitating heat recovery, installing a biomass boiler and using renewable electricity. To address remaining emissions, Philip Morris said it bought Gold Standard certificates, each worth one ton of CO2-equivalents removed, from climate protection groups.
Other initiatives include lowering greenhouse gas emissions through its supply chain by coordinating with its suppliers.
Philip Morris also said it plans to achieve zero net deforestation of natural forest by 2025.
