Total U.S. coal production for the week ended Sept. 21 declined about 9% year over year to 13.5 million tons from 14.9 million tons, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
For the 52 weeks ended Sept. 21, coal production totaled 730.3 million tons, a year-over-year slump of 3.3%, while year-to-date coal output dropped 4.4% year over year to 520.5 million tons.

The western region's coal production for the week reached 7.5 million tons, an 11.1% decrease from the prior year week's 8.5 million tons. Data for the western region covers Powder River Basin mines.
Coal production from Appalachian mines totaled 3.5 million tons in the week ended Sept. 21, down year over year from 3.7 million tons.
The interior region's production amounted to 2.5 million tons, a 7.4% decline from 2.7 million tons in the week a year prior. Interior region data covers mines in the Illinois Basin.
The EIA's production data is derived from rail carload estimates.
