Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Inc. and Tufts Health Plan Inc. agreed to combine, a move that has been unanimously approved by their boards.
The new organization does not yet have a name. Its board will be chaired by Joyce Murphy, who is chair of Harvard Pilgrim Health's board. At the organization, Tufts Health Plan President and CEO Tom Croswell will become CEO, while Harvard Pilgrim Health President and CEO Michael Carson will become president.
The organization will serve about 2.4 million members in Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and offer employer-sponsored plans, Medicare and Medicaid plans, qualified health plans and plans for people who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid.
Wellesley, Mass.-based Harvard Pilgrim Health and its family of companies offer health benefit plans, programs and services. Watertown, Mass.-based Tufts Health Plan provides employer-sponsored plans, and Medicare, Medicaid and marketplace plans.
