Total U.S. coal rail traffic for the week ended Sept. 21 declined 10.4% year over year to 78,881 carloads, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.
Year-to-date coal rail traffic declined 6.7% through the week, while total rail traffic for the week decreased 6.8% year over year to 528,670 carloads and intermodal units.
BNSF Railway Co.'s coal shipment volumes clocked in at 36,853 carloads in the week ended Sept. 21, decreasing 6.2% from the previous week's 39,282 carloads and declining 6.9% from the 39,594 carloads in the year-ago week.
Union Pacific Corp.'s coal shipment volumes this week were at 17,465 carloads, a 6.6% decrease from 18,704 carloads in the previous week and a 22.2% drop from the previous year's weekly volume of 22,444.
Eastern railroad CSX Transportation Inc.'s shipment volumes of coal stood at 16,466 carloads, jumping 20%
Norfolk Southern Corp.'s coal shipment volumes totaled 15,760 carloads for the week, up 5.2% from the previous week's 14,978 carloads while declining 13.5% from the 18,210 carloads in the same week a year ago.
Kansas City Southern's latest weekly coal shipment volume was 3,184 carloads, increasing 3.4% from 3,079 carloads in the previous week. The railroad serves 10 U.S. states and Mexico.
