AccorHotels to make play for Airbnb market with 200 new hotels

AccorHotels said it intends to debut an additional 200 lifestyle hotels globally, in a move that will target clients of Airbnb, The Australian Financial Review reported.

The hotels will be designed to draw in guests who are seeking a "local experience," drawing from Airbnb's business model.

The publication said the hotel group is planning to open majority of the hotels under the Jo&Joe, Mama Shelter and 25Hours lifestyle brands in Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, and Queenstown in New Zealand.

AccorHotels COO Simon McGrath was cited in the June 7 report as saying the lifestyle brands will appeal to everyone who wants experience beyond a hotel's star rating.

The AFR noted that similar to Airbnb, AccorHotels' new offering will also provide services including local guides and bicycle rentals.

The latest plans come on the back of AccorHotels' CEO Sebastien Bazin's earlier comments on how the company was trying to become more competitive with its Australian rental business.

"They are tapping into mine, so I might as well do it to them," Bazin said in a Melbourne conference in May, referring to their plans to make a play for Airbnb's market and clientele.
