Report: WTO sides with Japan in anti-dumping dispute with South Korea

Japan asked South Korea to revise tariffs on pneumatic valves after the World Trade Organization's final ruling in an anti-dumping dispute went in favor of Japan, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.

However, South Korea dismissed Japan's suggestion, seeing the ruling as the former's victory and saying the decision did not find the nation in violation of WTO rules. If the two nations fail to resolve the dispute within 15 months, Tokyo could seek to charge additional duties on South Korean goods, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.

South Korea reportedly imposed tariffs on pneumatic valves in 2015, claiming that Japan's cheap exports of valves were hurting South Korean producers.

The final WTO ruling comes amid increased tensions between Japan and South Korea over a court case involving compensation for forced labor during World War II.

A prior ruling from the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body was seen as mixed, though it still went against South Korea's anti-dumping tariffs.
