Talks fail between Caserones union, Lumina Copper; strike impending

The workers' union at JX Nippon Mining Metals Corp. and Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co. Ltd.'s Caserones copper mine in Chile said Aug. 8 that a strike is impending.

The 300-member union claimed mine operator Minera Lumina Copper Chile SA had taken an "intransigent" position to their demands, resulting in the failure of the last round of government-mediated negotiations with the company, Reuters reported.

Union President Nelson Iribarren said that if Lumina does not improve its contract offer by Aug. 10, a strike will begin Aug. 14.

The union at Caserones recently rejected Lumina's final contract offer.
