U.S. grocer Giant Food Stores LLC on Jan. 10 unveiled a plan to spend $114 million to build a fulfillment facility and two new stores, as well as remodel 35 existing outlets, by July 2021.
Giant Food, a unit of Dutch food retailer Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize NV, operates grocery stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. According to the announcement, the company plans to build the e-commerce fulfillment center and new stores in Pennsylvania.
The planned Giant Direct e-commerce fulfillment site will be built for storage and distribution of products for home delivery or in-store pick-up of online orders. The retailer will be partnering with another Ahold Delhaize unit, Peapod Digital Labs, for the development of the facility.
The retailer said the plan builds on the double-digit growth that its e-commerce brand Giant Direct has seen since its launch in 2019.
In 2019, Giant Food opened 17 additional stores and launched two new brands.
