Newmont slashes 120 jobs at Carlin gold operations in Nevada

After reducing the life span of one mine and partially suspending another, Newmont Mining Corp. is cutting 120 jobs at its Carlin gold mining operations in Nevada, Reuters reported Jan. 10, citing company spokesperson Omar Jabara.

The company changed the mine plan for its Emigrant Springs mine at Carlin in October 2018, reducing its life span that was originally set at 14 years.

Jabara did not specify why the mine plan was changed but said it could be due to a number of reasons including the gold price and costs of processing.

Jabara said operations in part of the Gold Quarry mine at Carlin were suspended for clearing after a wall slide.

He added that the company does not expect any further layoffs at Carlin, the biggest of four Newmont gold mining operations in Nevada.
