Amazon recalls power banks after reports of fire, chemical burns

Amazon.com Inc. is recalling approximately 260,000 units of AmazonBasics portable power banks over the risk of overheating and fire hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said March 13.

The six versions of the recalled portable chargers were manufactured in China by Guoguang Electric Co. Ltd.

Amazon received 53 reports of overheating in the U.S., which included one report of chemical burns because of contact with battery acid. Four cases of property damage including fire and smoke damage were also reported.

The power banks were sold through Amazon's website, Amazon Bookstore and pop-up stores from December 2014 to July 2017, the commission said.
