Indianapolis Power & Light Co. said May 14 that it has brought online a 671-MW combined-cycle gas turbine power plant in Martinsville, Ind.
The AES Corp. subsidiary in 2014 received the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission's approval to invest about $600 million for the construction of the Eagle Valley CC natural gas facility, it said in a news release, adding that commercial operation of the plant began April 28.
Indianapolis Power & Light expects the combined-cycle project to reduce the rate of emissions by 98% compared to the six coal- and oil-fired plants it replaced. With the new Eagle Valley plant and the conversion in 2016 of Harding Street plant from coal to gas, natural gas is now the Indianapolis-area utility's largest single power generation fuel, the company said.
