Denso, TomTom team up to develop autonomous driving technology

Japanese auto parts supplier Denso Corp. partnered with navigation provider TomTom NV to develop an end-to-end autonomous driving system.

Amsterdam-based TomTom will combine its high definition map with Denso's in-vehicle sensors, such as cameras and radars, to offer localization, perception and path planning functions of the new self-driving technology.

The development team, which will be based in Japan, will share data from both companies in building the system, according to a Jan. 4 news release.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Denso formally agreed to set up a joint venture for self-driving systems with Japanese peer Aisin Seiki Co. Ltd. in April.
