Walmart Inc. on March 31 rolled out a text messaging-based shopping service called Jetblack, which allows members to order items via text message and receive same-day or next-day delivery.
The service is the first to launch from the retail giant's technology incubator, Store No. 8, where it previously operated in "stealth" as Code Eight. Walmart launched it today in limited release to New York customers in Manhattan and part of Brooklyn.
According to the company announcement, Jetblack uses a combination of artificial intelligence and machine learning with expertise from professional buyers across different categories. Some of the ordered items may be sourced from Walmart and Jet.com, while others are procured from local brands and shops.
An earlier report by CNBC said Jetblack aims to attract more affluent shoppers, with a subscription fee of $50 per month, compared to Amazon.com Inc.'s Prime service, which costs $12.99 per month. The report said Walmart plans to roll out the service to more potential members in New York before expanding nationally.
