Total U.S. coal rail traffic for the week ended Aug. 24 declined 11.1% year over year to 81,319 carloads, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.
Year-to-date coal rail traffic declined 6.7% through the week, while total rail traffic for the week decreased 5.9% year over year to 532,483 carloads and intermodal units.

BNSF Railway Co.'s coal shipment volumes clocked in at 35,380 carloads in the week ended Aug. 24, decreasing 7.9% from the previous week's 38,404 carloads and declining 7.3% from the 38,160 carloads in the year-ago week.
Union Pacific Corp.'s coal shipment volumes this week were at 18,876 carloads, a 9.9% drop from 20,959 carloads the previous week and declining 23.9% from the previous year's weekly volume of 24,807.
Eastern railroad CSX Transportation Inc.'s shipment volumes of coal stood at 17,413 carloads, jumping 6.2% from the previous week's 16,404 carloads and decreasing
Norfolk Southern Corp.'s coal shipment volumes totaled 15,436 carloads for the week, down 7.3% from the previous week's 16,647 carloads and declining 23.2% from the 20,090 carloads the same week a year ago.
Kansas City Southern's latest weekly coal shipment volume was 3,063 carloads, increasing 18% from 2,595 carloads the previous week. The railroad serves 10 U.S. states and Mexico.
