US National Security Adviser John Bolton steps down

U.S. President Donald Trump said National Security Adviser John Bolton is stepping down due to policy disagreements.

Trump announced on Twitter that, at his request, Bolton tendered his resignation Sept. 10.

"I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House," Trump tweeted. "I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration."

Bolton disputed Trump's timeline and said he "offered" to quit. He tweeted that Trump responded by saying, "Let's talk about it tomorrow."

Trump said he would name Bolton's successor next week.

Bolton was reportedly set to appear for a scheduled press conference with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin at the White House later in the day.

The day before Bolton's announced departure, Trump dismissed reports of turmoil in his administration. Trump also denied overruling his advisers and Vice President Mike Pence on holding a potential meeting with leaders of the Taliban.
