Evraz suspends Raspadskaya coal mine after putting out underground fire

Production was suspended at an underground coal mine at Evraz Plc's Raspadskaya property in Russia's Kemerovo region after a fire broke out, Russian emergency services told Interfax on Dec. 4.

The blaze started in the late morning and has been extinguished, said the Kemerovo division of the Russian Emergencies Ministry. The fire was confined to a gas drainage chamber at the surface of the mine and 460 mine workers were immediately evacuated. So far, there have been no reports of injuries, and four miners remained underground to keep essential systems online and monitor the situation.

The Raspadskaya project includes three operational underground mines, an open pit, an underground mine under construction and a coal enrichment plant. In 2016, the property mined over 10.5 million tonnes of coal, according to information on the company website.
