Nuclear update: US output nudges higher as LaSalle, Callaway ramp up

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability took a small step forward early March 15 as it rose to 88.48%, up from 87.93% on March 14 but still holding below the 89.14% mark reported on the same day last year.

Providing a boost to total output was increased production at two reactors. Ameren Corp.'s Callaway plant in Missouri was at full power early March 15, rising from 70% on March 14, and the recently restarted LaSalle 1 in Illinois, which is owned by Exelon Corp., saw output increase from 1% on March 14 to 30% early March 15.

On the other hand, there was a cutback at Exelon's Byron 2 in Illinois. The plant was pegged at 90% power early March 15, down from 100% on March 14.

Looking ahead, private sources indicate that two reactors may be taken offline in the next few days for planned seasonal work.

As of early March 15, ten units remain shut.
