Carrefour SA on Aug. 13 launched a mobile app called Reciclaya that teaches users to recycle items they purchased from the French grocer.
Using the app, customers can figure out how to recycle their purchases by scanning a barcode printed on their receipt. Reciclaya will automatically sort the products in separate virtual waste bins so that customers can place items into their corresponding bin.
The company held a test run of the app in April at TheCircularLab in Logroño, Spain. The rollout was made in partnership with retail company TagitSmart.
Carrefour said the initiative is part of a European Commission project called Tagistsmart-Horizonte2020, which is focused on innovation and research. The project is also in line with its commitment to the United Nations Global Compact to reduce the environmental impact and promote sustainable development in all the company's activities, an objective that the food retailer said is also included in its Carrefour 2022 plan.
