ArcLight portfolio company taps Siemens to replace barges at NY plant

Astoria Generating Co. LP, a portfolio company of ArcLight Capital Partners LLC, is building two floating, gas-fired power peaking facilities in New York City's Upper Bay, which will ultimately replace four barges at the Gowanus Gas Turbines Station in Brooklyn.

Each new barge will have a capacity of 300 MW and be outfitted with four Siemens AG turbines, according to a news release from the developer.

"Retrofitting the station with SGT-A65 gas turbines and generators will improve the plants' power generating efficiency by nearly [50%] while significantly reducing potential emissions of pollutants like carbon dioxide and monoxide," Siemens said in the statement, noting that each turbine will generate up to 76 MW of power.

Siemens signed a 20-year, long-term service agreement with Astoria Generating.

The barges are part of the developer's SeaFloat fleet of floating power generation barges, which Karim Amin, CEO of power generation at Siemens, said "[combine] the advantages of [Siemens'] high-quality proven power plant technology with the mobility and flexibility that's required in peak consumption periods."
