BeIN, Kwesé to broadcast World Cup on free-to-air, pay TV

TOP NEWS

* BeIN Media Group LLC said June 14 that it will air 22 World Cup matches on beIN free-to-air channels in the Middle East and North Africa. BeIN Sports subscribers will have access to all 64 matches.

* Econet Media Ltd.-owned Sub-Saharan African pay TV operator Kwesé TV will air the entire World Cup on its pay TV service, while its free-to-air platform Kwese Free Sports will broadcast 32 games, Telecompaper reported June 8.

* BeIN Media's beIN Sports and Canal Plus Group SA have jointly launched the beIN Sports 1 4K channel, which will broadcast 56 World Cup matches, Broadband TV News reported June 15. The channel will be available to the Vivendi SA unit's subscribers that have the beIN Sports package.

* Pay TV company StarTimes Media launched a mobile app in Ghana that would provide subscribers with access to the World Cup, the Ghana News Agency reported June 12. Subscribers will have access to five StarTimes Sports channels under the On Sport bouquet.

* The Lebanese Network Broadcast will broadcast nine international thematic channels from Spi International Inc./FILMBOX under a distribution agreement between the parties, Rapid TV Europe reported June 10. The deal will allow cable and direct-to-home operators to air SPI International/FILMBOX's channels.

* StarTimes has entered into a project that would provide satellite TV services to about 800 villages in Kenya, NexTV News Africa reported June 8.

* Etisalat UAE and du have both signed a two-year deal with beIN Media to broadcast the World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Etisalat, through its eLife platform, and du will rebroadcast four beIN SPORTS MAX HD channels.

* Kwesé TV said June 1 that it has launched in Liberia under a distribution agreement with Orange SA's Orange Liberia. About 70 channels can be accessed on Kwesé's satellite set-top box, which will be sold at Orange stores in Liberia.

* BeIN Media's channels have been restored on du after stopping June 2. The companies came to a last-minute agreement to renew a broadcasting deal, which had expired May 31, Digital TV Europe reported June 4.

* Econet Media and iflix Sdn. Bhd. have created mobile app Kwesé iflix, which will live stream all 64 World Cup games and entertainment programs to Econet Wireless mobile subscribers in Zimbabwe. Kwesé said June 13 that it also teamed up with MTN Group Ltd. to launch the app in Uganda.

* The Middle East Broadcasting Center intends to focus on Saudi Arabia, together with its neighboring markets, due to positive developments in the region's media, entertainment and IT sectors, Digital TV Europe reported May 30.

* Kwesé, which has exclusive free-to-air and nonexclusive pay TV rights to air the World Cup in sub-Saharan Africa, excluding South Africa, has teamed up with the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria to air the tournament to the country's 44 TV broadcasters, Telecompaper reported May 29.

* BeIN Media has alleged that Arabsat is facilitating satellite broadcasts for a Saudi-based piracy network, Broadband TV News wrote May 29. The Qatar media company has requested FIFA to take legal action against Arabsat.
