Roku adds TV partner, estimates over 27 million active accounts in Q4'18

Roku Inc. added television maker Westinghouse Electronics LLC to its TV licensing program and disclosed preliminary fourth-quarter 2018 data for active accounts and streaming hours.

The TV licensing program offers Roku TV manufacturing partners solutions for building HD or 4K and HDR smart TVs.

Under terms of the partnership, Westinghouse Electronics will leverage Roku TV hardware reference design and operating system, which offers access to more than 500,000 movies and TV episodes through free or paid channels, to deliver HD Westinghouse Roku TV sets in the first half of the year, according to a Jan. 7 news release.

The 4K Westinghouse Roku TV models will launch later in the year.

Separately, Roku estimated that active accounts topped 27 million in the fourth quarter of 2018, up about 40% year over year. Streaming hours in the quarter grew 68% year over year to an estimated 7.3 billion hours, bringing total 2018 streaming hours to about 24 billion hours, up 61% from 2017.

Roku's free TV and movie streaming service, The Roku Channel, earlier announced plans to add premium subscriptions to the platform.
