SoCalGas asks court to annul order to clean homes near Aliso Canyon

SouthernCalifornia Gas Co. petitioned a court to nullify what it called an "unnecessarydemand" by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to cleanhomes of Porter Ranch and nearby residents due to the Aliso Canyon gas storageleak.

Public health officials' data "do not suggest that theconditions in the greater Porter Ranch area present a risk to public health,"the company said in a July 12 news release. "Despite this overwhelmingevidence, and without any supporting facts, Public Health issued a directive toSoCalGas that could require the company to clean nearly 35,000 homes."SoCalGas said that it has cleaned more than 1,700 homes of formerly relocated residents.

SoCalGas on July 12petitioned the Los Angeles County Superior Court for a writ of mandateto rescind the cleaning order.

The Department of Public Health in May said findings fromits environmental testing showed that residents are safe to return home andthat "there is no risk to public health related to the leak."

SoCalGas said it "remains committed to working with allof the regulators and with the community" but finds it "not acceptableto require unnecessary work that is neither justified nor supported."
