UK PM does not dismiss Huawei from 5G network speculation

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the U.K. will be seeking the best technology for the rollout of next-generation wireless networks in the country and suggested those opposed to certain brands name an acceptable alternative, Bloomberg News reported Jan. 14.

The comments came in response to a question about the U.K.'s potential relationship with Chinese telecommunications equipment supplier Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., a company that the U.S. has been lobbying its allies to avoid due to security concerns. Johnson is reportedly leaning toward permitting Huawei to access noncore parts of the country's 5G network.

U.S. officials have reached out to Johnson and his administration with concerns about Huawei's potential involvement in the U.K.'s 5G networks. Andrew Parker, director general of Britain's domestic intelligence service MI5, earlier said he had "no reason to think" that the use of Huawei technology would affect the country's intelligence-sharing with the U.S., London's Financial Times reported.
