Nestlé develops plant-based bacon cheeseburger

Nestlé SA said Oct. 9 it has developed a plant-based bacon cheeseburger.

The PB Triple Play is cholesterol-free, has lower amounts of fat and saturated fat, and a higher fiber content than a standard bacon cheeseburger, according to the company. A range of plant-based sauces have also been developed to complement the burger, Nestlé said.

"More and more consumers are looking for delicious, nutritious and sustainable plant-based options when they dine out. We have now raised the bar by developing a 'PB triple play' of ingredients for an all-time classic: the bacon cheeseburger. We're continuing to make good on our promise to offer consumers food that is right for them and right for the planet," CEO Mark Schneider said in a statement.

Nestlé said it will initially make the PB Triple Play available to restaurants and foodservice operators before extending it to food professionals in 2020.

This is the latest addition to Nestlé's growing portfolio of vegan and meat-alternative products. In April, Nestlé announced its plan to launch plant-based burgers in the U.S. and Europe under its Garden Gourmet Incredible Burger and Sweet Earth Awesome Burger brands. The company expanded its Garden Gourmet and Sweet Earth burger offerings in the U.S. and Switzerland last month.
