British American Tobacco to invest €800M in its Romanian factory by 2022

British tobacco products seller British American Tobacco PLC announced plans to invest €800 million over the next five years in its factory in Ploie?ti, Romania, according to a company news release June 11.

The company's production space will spread across 7,000 square meters and include a new manufacturing hall. The company said the new investment will provide 200 new jobs in Romania and will support the expansion of its tobacco heating product, glo, in countries across Europe in late 2018.

Tobacco heating products are devices that heat tobacco, creating a nicotine-containing aerosol that is inhaled by the user, according to the company. Because tobacco is not burned using this process, the company said it potentially contains much lower levels of toxins found in smoke when tobacco is burned.

British American Tobacco launched glo in December 2017. Since then about 25,000 consumers have purchased glo, according to the company. In addition, millions of specially designed tobacco sticks, called Neostiks, have been sold in 17 major cities in Romania.

Regional Director Tadeu Marroco said the company has invested $2.5 billion in the development and delivery of tobacco heating products and e-cigarettes over the last six years.
