RWE to close UK coal plant next year

RWE AG has decided to shut its 1,560-MW Aberthaw B coal-fired power station in the U.K. on March 31, 2020, due to challenging market conditions.

The German electric utility will transfer the plant's existing capacity market agreements for 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 to third parties and to other units within its fleet. Details of the capacity market agreement transfer are confidential, RWE said in an Aug. 1 news release.

Aberthaw B started operating in Wales in 1971. Its closure will go towards the company's goal of reducing its carbon dioxide emissions.
